Pub News [May 2019]

[extract from minutes of Wigan CAMRA Branch meeting on 21st May 2019]

The Stork Inn in Billinge, has recently closed its doors and was boarded up by New River Retail – a company that has a track record of acquiring pub sites with the aim of developing retail premises. A record of a building being erected on the site dates back to 1640, with the hotel beginning life there as a farmhouse back in 1718 and its crypt has historical records of it being used as a gaol by Oliver Cromwell’s troops during the English Civil War. A rumour has been circulating locally that it is to be turned into a Spar, and the last licencee appeared to be there just to run the place down.
If any members become aware of New River Retail acquiring any more pubs in the area please let the pubs officer know. They also own the Cherry Gardens and the land adjacent occupied by the community garden. The garden is currently on a 1000 year lease but if the council were to relinquish the lease it would potentially be at risk of redevelopment.

Gin Lane has opened on Wigan Lane with two cask ales. Wigan Brewhouse Gin Pit is on this weekend and the house beer is Loweswater Gold
