The Bird i’th Hand is a large traditional old pub with wooden beamed ceilings in the central main area; situated on the edge of the town centre of Hindley, near Wigan, having a car park at the rear and a beer garden with under cover smoking area. The site has excellent accessibility, being close to bus and rail links, and is nearby a densely-populated areas which consist of mixed demographics. The pub is a great community local, serving cask ales, back bar food snacks, Sky sports, offers weekly entertainment of a DJ on a Friday night and hosts a quiz on a Thursday night and has good value pricing, complemented with coffee and free Wi-Fi. In addition, a refurbishment took place in July 2017 to broaden the appeal of the pub by giving it a cosmetic upgrade by re-decoration both externally and internally. Inside the pub, it is split into different areas: Commercial Room, with Sky TV and darts table – which is where other pub games are played; The main bar with central servery with another TV, two other areas off this, the lounge area with another TV and the games room with a pool table. Within the pub there are photographs of how the pub used to look in years gone by, plus prior to the refurbishment a sign on the outside of the pub had these words “IN EVERY TOWN, THE INN OR TAVERN HAS A LONG HISTORY, OFTEN AS OLD AS THE ORIGINAL HAMLET ITSELF. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BIRD I’TH HAND, BUILT IN 1607 REVEALS THAT IT WAS A COACHING HOUSE. IT IS ONE OF THE OLDEST BUILDINGS IN HINDLEY, HENCE ITS LISTED BUILDING STATUS AND BOASTS A HAUNTED SEAT SOMEWHERE IN THE VAULT, WHICH HAS REPUTEDLY BEEN USED AS A MORGUE AT SOME POINT. Formerly the Spinner’s Arms. Completely gutted and refurbished as ‘Castle on t’Hill’. A square central cocktail-style bar serves this compact open-plan pub. Quiz night Tuesdays.

EDINGTON ARMS : 186 Ladies Lane, Hindley, WN2 2QJ. (01942)256769.
Also known as the ‘Top Ale House’. The Edington is a cosy welcoming pub. The single bar is centrally situated in the front lounge. There is a games room with pool table. From the games room you can view the fantastic beer garden; it’s a must see!!, with its smoking area with large shelter with heaters. They have live music every Friday night, and football and rugby on 3 big screens. Standing next to the Liverpool Manchester rail line it is ideally situated for any ‘rail ale crawl’ into Wigan or Manchester. Beers: Joseph Holt Bitter, Joseph Holt Mild, seasonal beers from The Holts range also Holts bottled beers. Full Disability WC available.

Formerly ‘Retro at The New Hockery Brook’. Free house, part of the small Holt Pub Co, Refurbished October 2017. 4 Handpumps initially serving from the Robinsons Range but also promotes Local breweries. Quiz Night Tuesdays.

In The Good Beer Guide several times. This small but traditional pub is located between Hindley railway station and the town centre. There is a large cosy lounge and a distinct bar/vault area. The lounge displays pictures from bygone Hindley and has a large screen TV for sports. This is an All Gates pub serving All Gates and guest beers. The pub has a dart teams playing in the local darts league. Quiz night on Thursday evening.

Recently (2014) refurbished inside and out. Live entertainment – Friday easy listening ; Saturday Rock Bands; Sunday’s – Karaoke Night & Disco; last Sunday of month comedy. Sky Sports TV on 2 huge and 4 large TVs cover the whole of the pub.

Town centre pub and a short walk from Hindley train station. Beers are from the Molson Coors range. Meals Served Lunch Thurs to Sun and Early Evening 16:00 to 18:00 (12:00 to 18:00 at Weekends).

The Swan offers Live Sports on Large Screen TV’s and bar food five days, a week; Wednesday – Friday 12noon – 3p.m and 5p.m – 8p.m, from 12 noon – 8p.m on Saturday and 12noon – 7p.m on Sunday. Six hand pumps serving a range of guest real ales.

Refurbished in late 2011, the pub is now open plan. The new layout has improved the popularity of the pub.
