Pub News [February 2020]

[extract from minutes of Wigan CAMRA Branch meeting on 19th February 2020]

The Harrow Inn between Ashton and Golborne is reopened in December 2019. This was a soft opening progressing to a full reopening in January 2020.

Formally Casa Carlos in Standishgate, Wigan has opened on 23 December 2019 using its original name of the Whitesmiths Arms. The bar and restaurant have been fully refurbished. The bar which is a cosy separate area form the main restaurant serves locally brewed real ales through 3 hand pumps. However there have been some reports of beer quality not being very good.

The Foresters Arms in Shevington Moor has been awarded with Locale accreditation and also received a runners up certificate in the winter pub of the season award.

In mid-January 2020 The Ellesmere Inn, Hindley, was sold by Marston’s to the Hawthorn Leisure arm of the New River group. Existing licensees remain in place and seem quite happy with the new owners. No material changes have been made to the pub so far.

The Shamrock, Preston Rd, Standish is currently closed, awaiting further news on this.

An article appeared in the Wigan Observer on 31 January 2020 regarding the Crown at Worthington. The Crown has stood empty for the best part of 4 years and seemed at times like it might never make a comeback. A save the Crown campaign was launched and then in 2018 the site was purchased by Chorley based company Publican Ltd with a view to refurbishing and re-opening it. At the end of January 2020 Publican spokesman Gary Lewis revealed that the firm was now close to bringing in a new tenant at the Crown who would have the pub back open within months. Activity has been spotted at the pub recently.

The Cross Keys in Ashton has been showing progress with building work via social media.

A new bistro/real ale bar call the Copper Tap is being planned in Orrell.

The Stag in Garswood has closed.

The planned Mayflower Brewery bay on Gidlow Lane is not now going to happen – the brewery are to concentrate on their plans for a new bar on Bolton station.

The Swan & Railway expect to open their hotel rooms in about 3 weeks time.

The Railway in Parbold are planning a beer festival from 1st-3rd May and would appreciate any offers of help.
